Education & Scholarships
We expand access to quality education for children and youth through scholarships, mentorship and school improvement.
OVERVIEW
Access to quality education is a cornerstone of sustainable development, yet millions of individuals— particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and East Africa—are systematically excluded. The Eden Initiative’s Education & Scholarships Pillar is designed to address the multifaceted barriers to education by investing in equitable access, learner retention, academic success, and post-education opportunity. The pillar integrates grassroots solutions with globally recognized frameworks to support individuals from vulnerable and underserved communities.
Context and Challenge
Despite global progress, education inequality remains one of the most persistent and pressing development challenges. According to UNESCO (2024):
- 244 million children and youth globally are out of school
- 771 million adults worldwide lack basic literacy skills, two-thirds of whom are women
- In Sub-Saharan Africa, 1 in 5 primary-aged children and 1 in 3 lower-secondary-aged youth are not in school
- Over 50% of learners in East Africa do not meet minimum proficiency standards in reading or math by the end of primary school
- In contrast, high-income countries boast near-universal literacy rates and school life expectancy of over 16 years. These disparities are most acute among vulnerable groups—girls, rural children, refugees, and students from low-income families.
Objectives
- Access & Inclusion:Reducing financial, geographic, and social barriers to educational entry and progression.
- Retention and Completion:Creating safe and supportive environments that enable students to stay in school through completion.
- Quality and Relevance:Promoting learning that is aligned with 21st-century skills, local labor markets, and student potential.
- Transition and Leadership:Enabling students to transition to higher education, employment, and leadership in their communities.
