Community Development & Empowerment
OVERVIEW
Poverty, food insecurity, and infrastructure deficits continue to undermine the well-being of millions across Sub-Saharan Africa. The Eden Initiative’s Community Development & Empowerment Pillar is designed to address these challenges through localized, scalable solutions. This pillar focuses on building resilient communities by promoting grassroots enterprise, ensuring food security, and strengthening local infrastructure.
Context and Challenge
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains at the epicenter of global poverty and hunger. In 2024, 464 million people in SSA live in extreme poverty— 67% of the world’s poorest, despite the region accounting for only 16% of the global population (World Bank, 2024). Children are disproportionately impacted, with 15.8% living in extreme poverty—more than double the global average for adults (UNICEF, 2023). Food insecurity is worsening:29.3% of SSA’s population faced food insecurity in 2023 (USDA, 2023). Climate change, conflict, and economic instability are contributing to projections that Africa will surpass Asia the number of hungry people by 2030 (UN, 2024). In East Africa, up to 80% of the population relies on subsistence farming (FAO, 2023), but productivity remains critically low. Compounding the problem, 600 million people in SSA still lack access to electricity, and only 53.8% rural residents live within 2 km of an all-weather road (ISS Africa, 2023). Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) represent 90% all businesses in SSA (GeoPoll, 2023), yet face steep barriers to accessing capital, markets, and business services.
